try judo, aikido, jujutsuIm gonna start taking tae kwon do soon and i was wondering if you had any tips or advise?
TKD is a great choice provided you have chosen a good school... it will be pretty laid back for you in the beginning.. don't worry about it too much, just pay close attention to your instructor, and get the basics right.... without the basics, it doesnt matter how good you think you get... it will be useless.... TKD will give you excellent flexibility, balance, and technique (which doesnt always translate into a good fighter (but that is a whole different argument)... During the first few months you will basically focus on stances, a few different blocks, kicks, and hand strikes... again it is imperative that you learn these techniques properly, as almost all other techniques are some variation of the basics.... good luck and train hard
gah taekwondo is not just about kicks. it famous for it's kicks but it doesn't only kick. you wouldn't ever block with your legs unlike kickboxing. the self defense is almost all hands. no one would actually do a fancy butterfly kick, most tournement fights are just the basic kicks, variants and combos.
Don't say ';can't';--trust me on this! I speak ftom experience on this.
Do the best you can.
Always be willing to try difficult techniques.
You don't have to be a competitor to take TKD, so don't listen to bad advice. The person who said make sure you find a good school is right. Most teachers are addicted to martial arts anyway and have mastered several forms. They will incorporate other forms, typcially with TKD, Akido is mixed in during the self defense unit. Also, women's legs are closer in strength to men's while the upper body strength is much farther apart, so kicking may be the answer. The school where I took also taught it to the black belts--which I am not , but I am going back. I would encourage anyone to learn this or any other form because it is helpful, especially to women, to learn to escape an attacker should the need arise. It's really all personal preference anyway and the element of surprise that makes it useful--in other words, your attacker thought you would be vulnerable and not fight back, so any martial art you use should run he or she away--these people are cowards and want an easy target, which you won't be after taking Tae Kwon Do!
make sure that you have good balance and flexibility,
so that you can perform all the kicks you'll be doing.
Don't take anything you don't even know what's like. TKD is famous for having many McDojos in the USA, so it would be hard to know if your dojo is good.
Ultimately TKD focuses on competition, not self defense, its full of show kicks, most of them require you to be an advanced practitioner and so inefective in real life situations.
Also requires you to build your flexibility which needs daily stretching to make your kicks work, and so after you quit, you won't get them to work and so it will be a waste.
That's the problem on relying to much on kicks, its like 80% kicking in TKD.
LOOK - LISTEN -%26amp;- LEARN ... Study Martial Arts films to get a idea of what you'll be getting into.
If your not training to win, or be the best fighter that you can possibly be, then there's no need to train at all !
The biggest thing you must understand is that your going to get hurt, but it will make you stronger.
Example: Knuckle burns, scrapes, arms, joints, muscles, maybe a jammed finger ... hahahaha, but after all the pain you'll develop some lethal styles, and maybe learn the iron palm, and steel finger technique.
Right here is some advise. I have tried most Martial arts and like TaeKwon-Do the best. Dont listen to the first guy cause honestly i have been going for under a year now and notice that EVERYONE would prefer not to kick.9/10 black belts would not use their feet in a fight like on the street. There is more to it that kicking. You learn so much through it that you can put into everyday life. It is about respecting other and earning the right to sit your grading and your pattern and so much more......
Don't take tae kwon doe, its the pu**y of all martial arts.
Seriously, TKD is just kicking, go learn judo, jiu-jitsu, muy-thai, karate or anythign really. TKD is not very usefull at all. Its really effective if the person you fight against isnt expecting the attack and is very unexperienced. Unless a lot of luck is on your side, youll lose Big time.
PS: its Krav Maga, I don't like Krav maga, personally, unless you've made some very serious ennemies, like as in you know your gonna get kileld soon.
