Because he is the first black president, there may be more interest. However, there is always someone looking to make a worthless piece of junk seem relevant and worthwhile during the lifetime of the opportunity. They have been making collector plates and coins for presidents for decades. They no doubt had a McCain ones ready to go should the election have gone the other way. Lots of people collect political memorabilia. My husband has stuff going back to the 1800s. And, no, we won't be buying the plate or coin but we do have an Obama piece sitting next to a Ronald Reagan coin.

They do it for tons of people. My redneck ex owned John Wayne plates (and therefore, is my ex). It's not really that big of a deal. No controversy here. I guess my only surprise is that people keep buying the stupid things.
