I have read that storage heaters were introduced in 1950. Was Economy 7 introduced at the same time, or did it follow later? Are there any on-line sources of such information? Can anyone advise on the history of storage heaters and Economy 7.?
I had economy 7 and storage heaters at Scampton in 1972
You copuld only get the two together when I was forced into it by the RAF
the storage heaters were just a big steel cabinet filled with house bricks and a heating element at the bottom. A fan blew when the thermostat worked.
It was crap.
I was lucky, the system was installed by the cheapest tender, and my system was 12 hours out, so I had cheap electric in the day time! the price difference was substantial, but electricity was a lousy option for heatingCan anyone advise on the history of storage heaters and Economy 7.?
Hi,
A company called Dimplex came up fith daft notion of a metal box full of bricks, and an element to heat them up in the 1960's.
They are totally useless, inefficient, and weigh a ton.
The advent of 7 hours of cheaper electricity during the night did little to help.
If you have no central boiler, what happened to good old coal / log fires ?
I have both, so can crank up a couple of cosy fires instead of the oil-fired boiler. (No gas in the village)
Boxes of hot bricks cost a fortune to heat up electically, so I am not suprised that I haven't seen ';storage'; heaters for many a year now, and good riddance !
